Ovid Township is located in south-central Branch County in the south-central region of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The township is primarily rural and agricultural in character and it was officially organized by the legislature in the spring of 1837. The name Ovid was bestowed upon the township by William Swarthout, the largest landowner in the township at the time, who came to Michigan from the town of Ovid in New York.

Lakes are the dominant feature of Ovid Township and they are scattered throughout the 36 square miles, the most significant of which being 1,610 acre Coldwater Lake.
